How did a couple of auto mechanics
from East Cambridge, Mass. Become national radio stars...on NPR
yet?
Well, for as long
as they can remember. The Brothers Magliozzi loved to take things
apart to see how they work and then put them back together again
over and over.
Both graduated from
the prestigious MIT; following which Ray began teaching and Tom
decided to hang out in the corporate world for a short time. Eventually,
they got together in a venture they call "Hacker's Heaven",
a garage where people could do their own car work and the Magliozzi's
would rent space and tools to them. But they ended up fixing most
of the cars themselves anyway.
Since their business
was new and different, people knew about the brothers and they
were asked to appear on a panel of automotive experts at WBUR,
the Boston NPR affiliate...and pretty soon the show was theirs.
Ten years later it was launched as a full national network program.
Today, Tom writes
and hosts "Car Talk" while brother Ray runs the garage
and hosts "Car Talk", obviously to the delight of millions
of people in the world.
