WOSO's Weather Report Meteorologist

John Toohey founded ClimaData Corporation in 1991 and in addition to WOSO, it serves clients in the United States and in the Caribbean with weather information and forecast. John, designated a Certified Consulting Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society, is also an associate of Climatological Consulting Corp., which specializes in expert witness testimony in cases where weather is a factor.

After completing his studies in Atmospheric Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. in 1984, John spent the first seven years of his professional career with the United States' National Weather Service in locations such as San Juan, Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Washington D.C.

He was raised in Puerto Rico, graduating with honors from Academia Santa Teresita High School.

It is during hurricane season that thousands of WOSO listeners turn first to hear what John Toohey says about any threats. John says, "Here in Puerto Rico we have seen a dramatic increase in land falling hurricane threats in the past ten years. Hugo was the first strike in decades. Then we had Hortense with its massive floods. Georges was the strongest hurricane to cross the island of Puerto Rico since San Felipe in 1928. Whether it's nature's own cycles, the La Niņa Phenomenon, of even global climate change, it seems like we've only just begun a treacherous periods of hurricane activity. WOSO was ClimaData's very first client and I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Puerto Rico through El Oso, hopefully to predict perfect weather, but always ready to guide you through difficult moments as well."
