Joe Esteras was actually born in Old San Juan above his father’s jewelry store. He moved with his family to New York City when he was six years old, later finishing high school in the San Francisco area. In 1967, he returned to Puerto Rico for a visit and stayed to launch an ornamental plant and flower nursery in the mountain pueblo of Aibonito. He and his wife, Norma, have also been the owners of the famous La Piedra Restaurant for the past sixteen years.

Calling upon his experience and expertise in plants, flowers and herbs, Joe Esteras has been one of radio’s most popular talk-hosts for the past ten years with "The Garden Show" every Saturday morning on WOSO.
