Gary began his broadcasting career 35 years ago, in 1965, in an unusual manner by creating and hosting a music program on major market radio called: "The Music of the World in the Language of Today". It was unusual because his baritone voice and ability to pronounce in several languages got him the job, but, of course, green kids rarely begin their careers in such large markets as Toronto, Canada. So it wasn't but 6 months later that the company shipped him off to a remote northern Ontario radio station to practice commercials to his heart's content. And, to chase ambulances, report car wrecks, snow storms, dog sled races, court cases, fashion shows, and just about everything one needed to know about what goes on in a small wilderness community.
Since then, Gary has worked for several Canadian and U.S. networks in radio and television, primarily as a newsman, reporting on politics, public events, natural disasters, and war, war games and Native Indian war dances. He has served as a foreign correspondent in Israel, dodged terrorist bullets near the Lebanese border at Metul, and was Communications Director at the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, in 1981-1982.
Gary has interviewed four Prime Ministers of Israel and Canada, two U.S. Presidents, Latin American and European diplomats, countless politicians and personalities. His favorite interviewees, however, are regular people, talking about what they do, how they live and what concerns them most. He has a keen interest as well, when not covering news, in helping people as a counselor and therapist for families afflicted by alcoholism and addiction to other drugs.
Tuominen's formal studies were at the Universities of Minnesota and Nebraska, and graduated with Honors from the Larry Henderson School of Radio and Television Arts at Toronto. He has been associated with WOSO NEWS since 1989, and lives with his wife Carmen in Trujillo Alto. |
