At one point in her life Anna considered becoming a teacher. "The opportunity of having a captive audience all day long really appealed to me. I shudder to think of the education I would have provided the poor children who were trapped in my classroom!"
Anna was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and spent her youth traveling about the world with her peripatetic parents and brother. She settled in Puerto Rico in 1968 and eventually started a career in advertising. "I really wanted to become an actress, specially comedy, but my parents thought that was not secure enough. So I used my clients as my audience and eventually became active in Civic Theater of San Juan and the San Juan Repertoire Theater. Both groups gave me very valued experience in stage presentations… allowing me to understand the craft as well as develop the talent. My career in advertising fulfilled me, supported my kids, and me gave me thrills and wonderful experiences, but I truly believe that my success in advertising is intimately linked to understanding characterization and mindset. That's something you use in acting."
While attending the University of Maryland, Anna worked at WMUC; the campus radio station where she was known as Miss Midnight. "Those were different times, indeed. I did 3 minutes every weeknight of suggestive, sexist material. At the time it was very daring but by today's standards is was pretty mild."
She claims that the most fun she has all week long is her two hours on
Speak-out, but please don't tell the administration of WingLatino Group, the agency where she still labors the rest of the week as Vice President, director of Creative Resources. "WOSO's
Speak-out gives me an exceptional opportunity to talk to a wide variety of people, about a wide variety of subjects and use my slightly off-center sense of humor." If coaxed Anna will also do a little stand-up comedy, but be prepared to be confronted with a host of accents, something she describes as "her hobby".
Anna is married to Donald Johndrow, Vice President and Managing Director of Pearle Vision of Puerto Rico and they are the parents of five children between them. |
